From a young tender age of six, Leong Wai Meng was ingrained into the skills of the martial arts, a family tradition that had been handed down for generations. Being a weak and delicate child by birth, this training helped build up his health and subsequently his career in Taekwon-do.
With such a rich heritage of the martial arts running in his blood, it is understandable that Leong Wai Meng possesses a deeper insight and perspective than most practicing artists about the real meaning of Taekwon-Do. Besides the fundamental purpose of strengthening the body and self-defense, the training cultivates the mind, mentality, as well as spiritual values of the disciple. In actuality, the martial arts places a lot of emphasis on spiritual and character development - confidence, positive feelings, virtues such as humanity, righteousness, humility, respect, selfless service, compassion and love. All these qualities can only be inculcated after penetrating the barrier of man's basic animal carnal needs and attaining a higher level of awareness. The ultimate aim is to banish completely every morsel of selfish and ill thought, for only then can one achieve self-realization, the highest level of genuine mastery in the martial arts.
Leong Wai Meng is saddened to see the extent of degradation the arts has suffered through commercialization and unhealthy competition. His empathy an concern are justifiable since these prevailing situations are bringing out the worst in a student as well as the teacher. The all-encompassing need to win, achieve fame, success and money obscures all other thoughts until it becomes an obsession which is entirely against the principles of the martial arts.
It is time for the martial arts to revert to its original objectives. Masters must learn the true significance of the arts and pass on the knowledge to their students. The former is like a sculptor who patiently molds with loving care the character of his disciple into a fine, perfect finish.
Leong Wai Meng's ambition is to be an ideal Master who can develop in his students superior qualities worthy of a Taekwon-Do follower. This he hopes to accomplish with the help of the book he wrote, and witch is the text book of many ITF-organizations in the world.
